Blurb

He knows every play in the book. But she’s calling the shots.

I’m Maddox Ledger, all-star winger and the reason the Charlotte Strikers killed it in the playoffs. Yeah, the tabloids like to call me arrogant. A real hothead. All I see is a guy who plays to win. Wreaking havoc on the ice, breaking a few hearts—that’s all just part of the game. And I’m sure as hell not sitting on the bench.

When my teammate asks me to be in his wedding party, I can’t refuse. Lucky for me, the bridesmaid I’m paired with is the definition of eye candy, but she’s so much more than that. Lacey Easton is totally irresistible and she makes me want to be a better man. A glimpse of bare shoulder takes me back to a steamy, two-week Vegas tryst I can’t forget. One I’m eager to repeat.

Suddenly our one-night stand is turning into the sequel. Still, Lacey’s keeping secrets. She doesn’t trust me. And maybe I deserve it. But I know more than she thinks I do and there’s no chance I’m letting her get away—or letting another guy take what is mine. This time, I’m playing for keeps.

“And we’ll be right back,” Maddox announced, grabbing my wrist.
He pulled me away, and I went willingly with him. I glanced back at Braeden and he started toward us, but I shook my head, stopping him midstep. Maddox turned the corner, his eyes burning like fire.
“I thought I could get through this, but I can’t. I’m so fucking tired of the lies. I know who you are, Lacey.”
My heart stopped. I pretended to be stupid. “Of course, you know who I am. Stop being silly. We need to get back to the wedding.”
He stepped closer, caging me against the wall, with his lips so close to mine. “No,” he growled low. “I mean, I know who you are . . . Paige.” Keeping his eyes on mine, he glided a hand down my bare back and reached inside my dress, circling his fingers around my strawberry birthmark. My whole body broke out in chills. “Did you seriously think I wouldn’t recognize you?”
“Took you long enough,” I snapped.
“Oh, I knew who you were right after you left me in Vegas.” My mouth dropped. “Yeah, that’s right, sunshine. A well-paid private investigator can find out anything.”

Audiobook Review: Sized by Love by Melissa Foster

About the Book

Lizzie Barber runs a successful flower shop by day and secretly hosts the Naked Baker webcast at night to help pay for her younger sister's education. To keep friends and family from finding out about her sexy secret, she's put her social life on hold until her sister's education is paid off and she can stop filming the webcast.

Blue Ryder fell hard for Lizzie Barber when he met her a year ago, and he hasn't been able to get her off his mind since. Everything about the feisty little brunette, from her tight bod to her seductive smile, cuts straight to his heart. Though Lizzie has turned down every invitation he's extended--Blue is not about to give up trying.

Renovating Lizzie's kitchen brings Blue further into Lizzie's life, and the oven is not the only thing heating up. One night and one powerful kiss changes everything. But when Lizzie's secret is revealed and the safe bubble she's hidden in shatters, true love may not be enough to put the pieces back together

My Thoughts

This was a sweet and spicy romance set in a small town featuring Blue Ryder, a man who’s attracted to the frustrating Lizzie Barber. Frustrating because he’s been asking her out for over a year and she is always saying no.

Blue’s attraction to Lizzie is never hidden and he takes advantage of the time he gets to spend with her while renovating her kitchen to try and get her to go out with him. Lizzie is more than interested but her secret occupation as the titillating “Naked Baker” on her own web series is a huge obstacle.

In this day and age of flaunting it all on social media, it’s easy to dismiss Lizzie’s attitude as being prudish. I didn’t think she was a prude at all. Like many people, she finds herself between a rock and a hard place doing a job that makes her uncomfortable but the money it brings is very much needed. Her personal struggles and those when she tells her family felt very real. It’s the curse of families that they can equally love you and be disappointed by you at the same time. There’s nothing like guilt to make a person feel wretched!

Blue seemed too good to be true. I suppose that’s part of the attraction of a book boyfriend. He was loyal to Lizzie at all times and there was never a time when he even looked at another woman. His struggle to accept Lizzie’s side business – and the fact she lied to him at all - was credible. He was conflicted but like any good hero in a romance novel he came through in the end.

B.J Harrison is a new to me narrator. His voice is clear and crisp. His female voices are well spoken and he knows to put the relevant emotion into any spoken dialogue. I did find during some of the non-dialogue parts of the book that the narration felt somewhat removed from the story. It felt like a voice over for a TV show – like a documentary - where the action is being narrated by a removed voice. Several times I was taken out of the story because it felt like I was listening to a factual reading. Overall, the narration was well above average and I would definitely choose to listen to other books narrated by B.J Harrison.

Book Review: Slow Horses by Mick Herron

About the Book

Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who’ve screwed up a case in any number of ways—by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such “slow horse,” is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations.

When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Is the victim who he first appears to be? And what’s the kidnappers’ connection with a disgraced journalist? As the clock ticks on the execution, River finds that everyone has his own agenda.

My Thoughts

Mick Herron’s Slow Horses is a fabulous read! I found it to be quite the page turner as I learned more about who the Slow Horses were and how they found themselves as part of a motley crew on the outs of the British Special Services.

You really need to have your wits about you in this game, as loyalty appears to be only as strong as what leverage you hold over someone, or someone holds over you.

The storyline kept me fully engaged and the characters brought a lot of variety to the story. As outwardly vile as he appears, my favourite was Jackson Lamb. He was intelligent, wily and a master manipulator. I found the book original in its content and can’t recall when I last read a book that kept my heart racing as we neared the end.

Being set in London, one of my favourite cities in the world, was the icing on top of this very tasty cake. I cannot wait to get stuck into the next book in the series.

His second standalone, Nobody Walks, was shortlisted for the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger in 2015, and was one of Booklist Magazine’s Best 101 Crime Novels of the Decade.

He is the author of the acclaimed Jackson Lamb series, the first of which, the Steel Dagger-nominated Slow Horses was hailed by the Daily Telegraph as one of the “the twenty greatest spy novels of all time”. The second in the series, Dead Lions, won the 2013 CWA Goldsboro Gold Dagger, and was picked by the Sunday Times as one of the best 25 crime novels of the past five years. Excerpt

Leaning on the bleachers, Chris cracked peanuts between his teeth and spit the shells. I hadn’t seen him in days and it seemed like years. Every time I saw the kick of his hips and the way his lips stretched across his teeth when he smiled, it seemed like the first time.
I watched him.
He watched me.
School started the next day. We’d go back into our different worlds. Would we meet again? Would we see each other at all? We’d grappled with the question by avoiding it.
A waft of smoke from the grills came between us.
We were alone. Surrounded by people, we were alone.
He pitched his peanut bag in the trash and washed it back with a bottle of off-brand cola. When he finished, he sucked in his bottom lip to catch an errant drop.
He tossed the bottle up. It spun in the air, and with a tap of his knuckle on its way down, he sent it into the trash.
I stepped toward him, and he stepped back. Not away. He stepped back toward something, flicking his finger that I should follow.
Easiest decision I’d ever made. It was barely even a decision.
I glanced around for Mom and Dad. They were in the gazebo with Badger, the new mayor, and his staff. Harper and the kids played with the puppies while Johnny and his wife watched. Lance jaunted around the perimeter, peeing on poles whenever he could, nipping back any sibling who got too big for their britches, ever the alpha.
I tilted directions slightly toward the bathrooms, then once past the bleachers, I saw Chris peeking from an alley between the hardware store and the library. I picked up my skirt and ran toward him, cutting the corner so hard I lost my balance. Out of nowhere, his hand was on my arm, keeping me from falling over.
Finger to lips, he led me to a black iron door. He clinked through his keys and opened it, stepping out of the way so I could pass through. We were in an office.
He closed the door with a loud clap, leaving the window as the only light.
“Chris?”
I barely got out the S before his lips kissed his name away. He put his hands on my jaw, keeping it still so he could invade my mouth. It felt good to give it to him. My body lost all its strength, held up only by the electrical currents between us.
“Catherine,” he said in a breath, keeping his lips an inch from my face as he spoke.
“Where are we?”
“Back of the hardware store. I open on Thursdays.”
“What are we going to do? I’m scared.”
“Of me?”
“Of not seeing you anymore.”
“I’ll find you.”
I clutched his shirt as if I’d be swept away without him. “I don’t fit in anywhere. Harper is so smart she tolerates me. The only time I feel right, like I’m part of something, like I belong, is when I’m with you.”
“One more year. Then you can go to college and I’ll come after. We’ll be so far away, we’ll forget our names. When people ask where we’re from, we won’t even know.”
“I don’t know if we’ll make it a year. I feel like they see us. Even now.”
I must have been shaking, because he put his arms around me so tightly it hurt. I loved the pain of his attention. It was the pain of safety, of care, of being broken just enough for release.
“Harder,” I said into his shoulder.
He squeezed me so tightly I could just barely breathe, and the tension rolled off me like water.
He let his arms go slack enough to look me in the face. “We’ll make it. Then I’ll follow you anywhere. I’ll be your puppy dog.”
“Oh, Chris, don’t be silly.”
“Don’t deny me. I’m yours.” He said the last word with a gusto I’d never associated with myself. As if life was something to grab with both hands and free like a bird that could carry us into the sky.
Together, we were freedom.
The bird launched from my chest and flew to my lips when we kissed again. Not a kiss of relief this time, but a kiss of passion. Ours was a kiss that began a string of thoughtless acts.
His hands slid down my body, grazing my breasts, landing at my waist. I felt the hardness under his jeans. I should have been scared, or freaked out, or ashamed, but I wasn’t. I was free.
He broke the kiss and stroked my bottom lip with his thumb. “Should we go back?”
“No.” I took his wrist and put his hand on the triangle below my belly.
He gasped and his lashes fluttered. Seeing that he liked it sent my body to the edge of common sense. This was crazy and I didn’t care. Being the good girl hurt, and this felt good.
“My parents have to stay at the barbecue,” I said. “That’s their job.”
He hesitated. Swallowed hard. Pinched a bit of my skirt fabric.
I nodded.

Book Review: Forget Her Name by Jane Holland

About The Book

Rachel’s dead and she’s never coming back. Or is she?

As she prepares for her wedding to Dominic, Catherine has never been happier or more excited about her future. But when she receives an anonymous package—a familiar snow globe with a very grisly addition—that happiness is abruptly threatened by secrets from her past.

Her older sister, Rachel, died on a skiing holiday as a child. But Rachel was no angel: she was vicious and highly disturbed, and she made Catherine’s life a misery. Catherine has spent years trying to forget her dead sister’s cruel tricks. Now someone has sent her Rachel’s snow globe—the first in a series of ominous messages…

While Catherine struggles to focus on her new life with Dominic, someone out there seems intent on tormenting her. But who? And why now? She doesn't have the answers - and in one final question lies her greatest fear.

Is Rachel still alive?

My Thoughts

What a lot of twists and turns in one book. Early on I had made up my mind about what had happened to Rachel but I was never certain enough that I would – if it was even an option - place money on it.

Jane Holland’s writing style was smooth and easy to read. It’s a thrilling ride to the end. I found all the secondary characters to be interesting and they all served the purpose, along with Cat and Dominic, to help the reader solve the mystery.

My biggest OMG moment actually occurred in the epilogue. The path that Cat and Dominic choose really surprised me. I really needed a reading buddy for the ending because I needed to process and discuss it.

A recommended read.

Book Review: The Secret Mother by Shalini Boland

About The Book

'Are you my mummy?’
Tessa Markham returns home to find a child in her kitchen. He thinks she’s his mother. But Tessa doesn’t have any children.

Not anymore.

She doesn’t know who the little boy is or how he got there.

After contacting the police, Tessa is suspected of taking the mystery child. Her whole life is turned upside down. And then her husband reveals a secret of his own...

Tessa isn’t sure what to believe or who to trust. Because someone is lying. To find out who, she must confront her painful past. But is the truth more dangerous than Tessa realises?

My Thoughts

The Secret Mother definitely starts in a thrilling way. Just imagine coming home to find a child there innocently asking you if you his mummy! And this is exactly what happens to Tessa Markham.

Tessa has not had an easy few years. As we learn of the tragedies that have impacted her, it’s hard not to want to applaud her ability to get up daily and have some semblance of a life. It may not be the life she planned or she wanted but it’s what she has and she is somehow managing.

Having driven away her friends, she is left with Scott, the husband she is separated from and Carly, her neighbour as her only sources of help to try and discover why little Harry was in her house. Scott is sceptical of her version of events. Carly has her own agenda for wanting to help Tessa. As she undergoes trial by social media, Tessa is cast as the villain in this story with seemingly nowhere to turn.

I found the book well paced and read it one sitting. I did not find the mystery difficult to solve early on as we are given plenty of clues. Having said that, Boland’s writing kept my interest to the end because I wanted every i dotted and t crossed. My one frustration is the never stated reason why no one claimed Harry in the beginning.

The Secret Mother was a great read for a rainy, lazy afternoon. I enjoy Boland’s writing style and will keep an eye out for more of her books.

Book Review: Hell Bay by Kate Rhodes

About The Book

DI Ben Kitto needs a second chance. After ten years working for the murder squad in London, a traumatic event has left him grief-stricken. He’s tried to resign from his job, but his boss has persuaded him to take three months to reconsider.

Ben plans to work in his uncle Ray’s boatyard, on the tiny Scilly island of Bryher where he was born, hoping to mend his shattered nerves. His plans go awry when the body of sixteen year old Laura Trescothick is found on the beach at Hell Bay. Her attacker must still be on the island because no ferries have sailed during a two-day storm.

Everyone on the island is under suspicion. Dark secrets are about to resurface. And the murderer could strike again at any time.

My Thoughts

I enjoyed reading Hell Bay. Kate Rhodes has done a great job of taking us on a trip to small island UK; it’s remote, it's desolate, it's beautiful.

When well written, which Kate Rhodes has done, characters in these settings fascinate me. Not only do I enjoy the historical aspect - especially people's ancestry as it relates to their surnames - but there’s a whole social hierarchy within a small group of people. It’s like a finely balanced machine where people know their place, for the most part keep their place all the while keeping the secrets of those around them.

It’s no wonder you need a police officer like Ben Kitto. Even though he left the island to pursue a career, he is one of theirs and what little talking islanders will do, they will say it to him and not an outsider.  This does not mean the job’s an easy one. Not at all. There are just some secrets people want to remain just that, a secret.

I was engaged from the start and was surprised by the final revelations. The clues are subtle but they are there. One again, I missed them. But hey, where’s the fun in figuring it all out before the end?

I can't wait for the next DI Ben Kitto book.

My Thoughts

Heartbreaker was my first Anna Brooks book and I liked it.

Ryan falls for Opal at first sight and I can see how his alpha ways made Opal uneasy. Added to this, Ryan is in town temporarily so he is not the ideal candidate to hitch your I-want-a-committed-relationship wagon to.

What I liked about Ryan is that even with his commanding manner he was not afraid to show his softer side to Opal or her daughter, Olivia. It was nice to read about a hero whose carrying around his own vulnerabilities after his own disappointments in love.

Opal definitely has a tough life as a single parent and it’s easy to get frustrated with her when she rebuffs Ryan so often. I had to keep reminding myself that she was an overburdened twenty one years old; she was a baby who had a baby!

There’s a bit of suspense in the book that adds to the overall story but does not overtake the relationship between Ryan and Opal.

The novella-length book was a quick read but I felt the story was complete.

New Release Book Review (& Excerpt): Baby Maker by P Dangelico

Baby Maker by P. Dangelico
Publication Date: February 20th, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Stella Donovan’s biological clock is a ticking time bomb.
The successful financial manager has spent her adult life building a career and neglecting her personal life. Problem is, she doesn’t believe in marriage. Not after watching her mother be treated like garbage by her father. Nope, marriage is not for her. All she wants is a baby. All she needs is a man to agree to her terms.
Dane Wylder, recently retired NFL tight end and future Hall of Famer, wants a baby.
Naturally, marriage is off the table. He’s not the marrying type. Women are great––as long as they’re trying to get into his bed and not his heart. But after years of living only for himself, he’s ready to be a father.
Sparks fly when a successful financial manager and a legendary football player enter into a legal agreement to have a kid together. They planned on everything––they just didn’t plan on each other.

My Thoughts

Baby maker is a fun, easy to read romantic comedy.

There’s plenty of humour peppered throughout the book even though the reasons for Dane and Stella creating a baby are serious.

I could poke many holes at the main characters; Dane because of his manwhore ways and Stella for choosing him over a turkey baster-style insemination after knowing him for such a short time. Credibility is stretched thin but Baby Maker is an entertaining read if you don’t take it too seriously.

The book did leave me feeling lacking in the communication-by-eyebrow department. There was a cornucopia of communication via eyebrows; raised, furrowed, winged, bunched, half-cocked, arched and likely more. When I notice and start highlighting the number of times eyebrows are mentioned, it’s excessive.

Excerpt:

Grabbing the pot of freshly brewed coffee from the coffee maker, he stares into the pot then drinks from it. I don’t bother to tell him it’s decaf. Throat working as he swallows, he holds up his index finger.
I’ve got a finger for him, the middle one.
“I don’t know what’s gotten into you but I’ve had enough.” He continues drinking. “And word of caution, if you come back to New York and continue to treat me like I’m cattle, a possession, you will damage this friendship beyond repair.”
He places the pot down, his eyes downcast as he leans on the counter for support. “I’m sorry…I was a real asshole last night and––”
“Last night?!” I shout. “How about for the past week.”
“Well you’re not helpin’ the situation!” he shouts back, his eyes sparking, then winces again.
My jaw hangs in disbelief. He can’t be serious. Is he really blaming me?
“The hell are you talking about? You’re blaming me? Me?! You’ve been unbearable––when you’ve been around, that is. Usually you’re running in the opposite direction. But somehow in your twisted little male peanut sized brain, it’s my fault?!”
“Yes, goddamit! Dancin’––smilin’ at that fucking cowboy!” His hand slashes through the air as if he’s indicating to someone in the corner. The veins near his temple pop up. Eyes impossibly wide, he advances on me, stopping a mere foot away. “You never smile at me like that!”
Huh? “What does that have to do with anything?!”
“Because I’m jealous! Okay! And you’ve made it very clear you’re not attracted to me but all I can think about is this!”
He’s on me before I can blink, arms crushing me to him, kissing me like I hold the last breath of air on the planet and he means to steal it.
A beat later he stops. His lips against mine he murmurs, “Kiss me back…please kiss me back.”

Meet P. Dangelico:
P. Dangelico loves romance in all forms, cuddly creatures (four legged and two), really bloody sexy pulp, the NY Jets (although she’s reconsidering after this season), and to while away the day at the barn (apparently she does her best thinking shoveling horse crap). What she’s not enamored with is referring to herself in the third person and social media so don’t expect her to get on Twitter anytime soon. Oh, and although she was born in Italy, she’s been Jersey Strong since she turned six.
